Happy hour indeed!

26th August 2010

I had quite a few laugh out loud moments reading this book. I liked all the characters, especially the heroine. The only thing that disappointed me, was the quick resolve at the end. I don't know what kind of ending I expected, but I didn't expect a nicely wrapped one. I guess since this is a series, I wasn't really expecting everything to be solved in the 1st book. I will be getting the 2nd book in the series.

Romance Lite

17th August 2010

Although it was an entertaining read, if your expecting some intense romance you'll be disappointed. Yes there is a romantic interest, but it felt like it took a back seat to the rest of the story. Oswald just seems like a weak character and there was never an real build of romantic tension. Having said that, the main character was an original take on a heroine.

So if you just looking for a light entertaining read, with just a blush of romance you'll enjoy this. If your looking for something with more sizzle - I'd suggest something else.

cool characters, witty dialogue, and laugh out loud moments in this Jane Austen channeled vampire romp.

Funny and urban fantasy are not words that often go together, at least not intentionally, but HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA is the rare exception combining cool characters, witty dialogue, and laugh out loud moments in this Jane Austen channeled vampire romp.

Milangro had a strong voice and her outlook on life was hilarious in a Bridget Jones meets Charo kind of way, and there were several bitable vampires who pursued her, but it was the vampire matriarch, Edna who stole this book for me. She was prickly, condescending, and subtly insulting every time she spoke. I loved her.

And did I mention funny? I laughed so hard while reading HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA that I actually had to put the book down at one point because I was crying too hard to see the pages (it was the scene where Edna takes Milangro shopping for the second time).

Was it predictable? Yes. Was it groundbreaking in terms of world building? No. But it was smart, and clever, and great fun from beginning to end. If you're feeling a little depressed by all the somber plotlines in most urban fantasy books, HAPPY HOUR AT CASA DRACULA is like a shot of margarita flavored sunshine in you tukis. I'm already planning my next visit to Casa Dracula.

Sexual Content: References to sex. A few mild sex scenes. A few mild scenes of sensuality.

Enjoy a sparkling blood cocktail on the house!

Great book- fresh take on an old topic, writing is light, spunky and fun. The author cleverly weaves us a tale with a strong heroine, smart messages and references to pop culture from Shakespere to Mel Brooks.

The heroine is a strong Latina woman who is comfortable with her own sexuality. This is enormously refreshing for two reasons:

1) We get a character with a rich culture and a little more color than traditionally seen in this genre

2) watching female characters struggle with their own sexuality gets OLD- even the strong ones seem to have to wrestle with feelings of guilt or repression when faced with sexual urges. Seriously, some of us are sensual and proud of it.

Milagro here goes through some realistic attempts to fit in, but ultimately embraces her sensuality in a way that should make all women proud. FINALLY!!

Aside from that, this was just very well written and A TON of fun to read. Only four stars because the ending was a little disappointing. It felt too rushed and had one or two aspects that just felt out of whack with the story. I am not a fan of those endings which often employ epilogues to go back and try to tie up all the loose ends. It changes the style of writing too dramatically and forces closure where none is needed.

However, not enough to ruin the overall impact of the story. Enjoy it!

Happy hour ?

The Latina heroin just got on my nerves, the hero was the most submissive vampire I had the disgrace to experience and the story is just stupid and absolutely not funny. This is the first and the last book I will buy from Marta Acosta , I absolutely dislike her style.
